Effects of a Magnetic Palatal Expansion Appliances with Reactivation System

A magnetic palatal expansion appliance is a dental device which helps widen the upper jaws of a human mouth. The upper jaw is also called Maxilla. The expansion of the Maxilla will help the bottom jaw and the teeth fit together in a better fashion. The procedure is a common dental procedure, mostly in the children. However, the implications of the procedure are successful in adults as well.

Magnetic Palatal Expansion

Usually, the magnetic palatal expansion appliances are used right after braces. Through this teeth can be straightened even further, with permanent effects.

The magnetic palatal expansion appliances were designed to cater to the needs of the design which is usually based on repulsive forces. The repulsive forces of neodymium-iron and boron magnets together combines with reactivation system can help people in astounding ways.

The magnetic palatal expansion has been a tried and tested way to expand the maxilla in one’s mouth considerably. It also helps in the stimulation of the mid palatal structure of our mouth, when it is expanding.

For the tests, eighteen dogs have been tested who were assigned to random orders of magnetic expanders and mechanical screw expanders. The non-magnetics metal bones were inserted in a bilateral form in the bones. These were 3mm laterally. They were inserted in line with the first and the fourth premolars.

The expanders were inserted in their mouth for about four weeks, after which they were removed. During these four weeks a considerable expansion of 6 mm was achieved. A 3-D imaging of the expansion revealed that the skeletal effects of the expansion process led to significant results.

In the results, it was found out that the dogs who were provided magnetic palatal expanders, or the magnetic expanders, their results were far better than the ones on screw expanders.

The following readings were marked out-

  • The difference between the two results in relation to the first premolars- 0.77 ± 0.06 mm; P <0.001

  • The difference between the distances in the fourth premolars was – 0.37 ± 0.06 mm; P <0.001

This was the case of screw expanders, which was greater than the magnetic expanders. Both the Magnetic expanders and the screw expanders led to the proliferation of positive results. They both helped in the remodeling of the bone structures and the midpalatal structures of the mouth while expansion. However the the magnetic palatal expansion appliances were found to produce a significantly smaller skeletal effect in comparison to the screw expanders. But, when it came to dental effects, the magnetic expanders results were far better than the screw expanders.
